Sweeper
We all like it when our kids score goals, but the more I learn about soccer (Note: I am very much the neophyte) the more I appreciate my son’s position. I found the following definition of a sweeper:
A fast & tough player who usually plays just behind the fullbacks, although he is allowed to roam. His job is to cover the space between the fullbacks & the goalkeeper & to stop “breakaways” & “sweep up” the ball or kick long “through balls” out of bounds so the defense has time to recover. Using a sweeper increases your “depth” & field coverage and therefore allows your fullbacks to push up to support your attack. A Sweeper is like a free safety in American football. A good sweeper must be fast & willing to make contact to steal the ball.

NSR East Coast Cup – Champs
This past weekend the boys played at the 1st Annual NSR East Coast Cup Soccer Tournament. The tournament was well managed, the weather was perfect, and the Kickers went undefeated (4-0: GD +20).
Great job boys!

Clemens is not the answer
Given that I am not an American League fan yet alone a Yankee fan, I have watched with a bit of glee as they have struggled to stay out of the celllar.
It seems they could learn from a thing or two from one of their past greats.
The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don’t play together, the club wont be worth a dime.

Youth Soccer – Kickers 96
My son’s team just wrapped up their Maps schedule and finished 6-0 with a GD of +23. The boys have a scheduled tournament this weekend (June 9th and 10th) and then they’re off until their pre-Brazil training.

Urban Meyer at it again!
Come on Urban get your facts straight … Although, Florida’s graduation rate is certainly worth noting, it’s not the best!
“Believe it or not, people are flipping a 180 on us,” said Meyer Tuesday night before he spoke to the Gator Gathering at the North Florida Fairgrounds. “This [Florida] is ultimately the place in my opinion you need to go — 80 percent … the highest graduation rate, the national championship, the style of offense, defense, kicking game that you would love to play at and a great academic school.

Manhattan Kickers ‘96
Before the weekend showers, the Kickers played their second Maps League game. The Kickers came out on top 9-1 over the Jersey Knights. In the second half, Henry was able to put away a beautiful cross from Sammy into the back of the net.

Manchester United 7-1 Roma Champions League
This was an absolute drubbing. The Roma captain summed it up best, “It is the saddest night of my sporting career,” admitted Totti.
